Ibn Kathir, in his tafseer of the ayaat about the Slaves of Ar-Rahman, mentions the translation that they sleep little and pray to Allah at night with fear and hope, and asking for forgiveness. Ibn Abbaas mentions that it's very easy to get this same reward (to be written as the muhsinoon!)--all you have to do is pray two extra rak'aahs (but when?) ...

In Suratul-Furqaan (Surah 25), ayah 63, Allah begins a description of what is translated as "the slaves of Ar-Rahmaan (Allah)..."

In ayah 64, He describes these "slaves" by saying:

َالَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّداً وَقِيَاماً …

This is translated as: those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrating (in sujood) and standing.

Tafsir ibn Kathir explains this ayah, and compares it to ayahs 17-18 from Suratuth-Thaariyaat (Surah 51):

كَانُوا قَلِيلاً مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

Translation: They used to sleep but little by night [invoking their Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear and hope]. And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness. [Surah Ath-Thaariyaat, verse(s) ] (translated by Muhsin Khan).

Ibn Kathir explains that this is a "good act" that the Muhsinun (good-doers) perform. [1]

According to a footnote in the The Noble Qur'an: English Translation of the meanings and commentary, Tafsir Al-Qurtubi states:

Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنه‏) said: "Whoever prayed two rak'at or more after the 'Isha (night) prayer, will be considered like those mentioned in this verse [i.e. V.25:64]." And Al-Kalbi said: "Whosoever prayed two rak'at after the Maghrib (evening) prayer, and four rak'at after the 'Isha (night) prayer will be considered like those mentioned in this verse."

SubhanAllah, I imagine most people probably already pray at least two ruk'as after Maghrib and three after 'Isha (two ruk'as sunnah and then one for witr), so all that remains is two more ruk'ah! Just two more ruk'ah to qualify under one of the acts performed by the muhsinoon? Under the criteria presented by Ibn 'Abbas and Al-Kalbi (رضي الله عنهما‏) it seems the answer is YES, wallahu ta’aala a’alem (and Allah, exalted is He, knows best)!

Just two more ruk'ah every night—By the permission of Allah, let’s make it a habit for His sake!

May He make us of the Muhsinun and those with whom He is well pleased. Ameen!

The ayahs are translated as: "Verily, the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2) will be in the midst of hardens and springs (in Paradise), taking joy in the things which their Lord has given them.
In our day to day lives; through work, school, family; we sometimes forget the real reason why we are living in this dunya--and the quick passing of it. We get comfortable. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) stated in a hadeeth, "How can I feel comfort when...?" Find out what he was referring to, and his advice on what to say in these times

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said, "How can I feel comfort while the angel responsible for The Trumpet has placed The Trumpet to his mouth and lowered his forehead, awaiting when he will be commanded (by Allah to blow in it)?"

They said, "O Allah's Messenger, what should we say?''

He said, "Say: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is Al-Wakeel (the best disposer of affairs); We have placed our trust in Allah."

The Companions repeated this invocation, saying, "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is Al-Wakeel (the best disposer of affairs); We have placed our trust in Allah."
Another example of this du'aa is the last ayah of Surah Tawbah:

حَسْبِيَ اللّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِي

Translation: Allah is sufficient for me. I have placed my trust in Him, He is the Lord of the Majestic Throne. [Surah Tawbah, verse 129]

What is the significance of saying this du'a from surah Tawbah?

Arafah IS Hajj. And the best du'a you can make is the du'a on the day of Arafah. So how can you really milk this day and get the most out of it? Prepare a massive du'a list--twenty pages or more. Make du'a for your eman, your health, your akhira, your wealth, your children, your ummah, ... everybody and everything you can think of. And twenty pages will not be enough, even with all that. We list some pointers to get you started--things that will help get you thinking and get your creativity flowing.

Arafah: the main day of Hajj. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said in one hadith: "Hajj IS Arafah." [Sunan Abu Dawud, book 10, #1944] How true that is--if you go to Arafah, but miss everything else, your Hajj is sound; and if you do everything else, but miss Arafah, your Hajj is not valid.

How much more important can you get than that?

Arafah, the day when millions of poeple gather in one place at one time to praise and supplicate to Allah.

So how can you make the best use of the Day of Arafah, while you're in Arafah? The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: "The best du'a you can make is the du'a on the day of Arafah." [Malik's Mutawatta, Book 10, #20.76.255]

So this is it--your chance to change the world insha'Allah, because the du'a you make on Arafah will be accepted, bi idhnillah. And you have a whole day to do it.

And remember--when you make du'a for someone who's not around, the angels make the same du'a for you! The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: "He who makes du'a for his brother behind his back (in his absence), the Angel commissioned (for carrying supplication to his Lord) says: Ameen, and it for you also (something similar)." [Saheeh Muslim, Book 35, #6589]

The best preparation you can make for the Day of Arafah is to write a du'a list. Write it out ahead of time, and make it long--at least twenty pages. What are some of the benefits of doing it ahead of time?

You can think of anything you want in this life and the next, and add that; you won't forget anything.

You can plan ahead, see where you want to be in 5, 10, 50 years, in the akhira, and incorporate that in your du'a list.

You have time to make du'a for all your brothers and sisters in Islam and your close relatives.

You can ask your friends and relatives what they want you to make du'a for, on their behalf. They will be extremely happy if you tell them you'll make du'a for them on arafah!

And trust me, twenty pages is not enough--if you squeeze every ounce, every second, of your time on Arafah making du'a--as you should--you can easily cover your du'a list a few times. So make it long, as long as possible.

Insha'Allah here are some ideas to help get you started on your du'a list--just some things to think about. Insha'Allah think up your own additional categories and personalize your list more.

Your eman

Your rank in Jannah (and Al-Firdaus)

Your knowledege of Islam

Your memorization of the Qur'an

Your health

Your wealth

Your job

Your kids--their eman and akhira, health, etc.

The ummah at large

Those oppressed in Palestine, Chechnya, Somalia, and worldwide

People you want to become Muslim--including presidents and world leaders

Countries you want to become Muslim--including your current residence

Guidance for every human being on the planet

Your Islamic work and projects

People who you know who aren't very practicing, to become more practicing

People you know who are practicing, to become better and more practicing.

Any weakness you have--any sin you commit--to be overcome

This is just a list to get you started. Insha'Alalh work on it, and you'll find ideas flowing.

Before that day, brush up on and make sure you know the etiquettes of du'a--praise Allah, glorify Him, thank Him, and send salaam and salaawaat on His Prophet Call Him by His great names--including Allah, Al-Hayyu, and Al-Qayyum--then ask what you want.

And does this apply to people who are not on Hajj? Allahu 'alim.

We ask Allah to accept our Hajj and the Hajj of all the Hujjaaj, and to make Hajj easy for everyone who goes or intends to go (ameen).

Check out this hadith:

The Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) said: "Surely, among the best of your days is Friday; so increase in (invoking Allah's) salaat upon me during it, for your (invocations for Allah's) Salaat (upon me) will be displayed to me." So they (the companions, (رضي الله عنهم‏)) asked: "O Messenger of Allah! How will our (invocation for Allah's) Salaat (upon you) be displayed to you when you have disintegrated (i.e. your body turned to dust in the grave)?" He replied, "Verily, Allaah (سبحانه وتعالى) has made forbidden for the earth (the consumption of) the bodies of the Prophets - may Allah's Salaat be upon them." [Sunan Abi Dawood #1531, graded Saheeh by Shaykh Albani]

What is 'salaat' upon the Messenger? It means to pray for him and ask Allah to bless him. Learn about it in much, much more detail here.

The Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) also said, whoever supplicates Allah to send salaat on me once, Allah will send salaat upon him ten times. (Saheeh Muslim, #808)

How do you send salaat/salawaat?

Ibn Abi Laila reported: Ka'b bin 'Ujra met me and said: Should I not offer you a present (and added): The Messenger of Allah (صلي الله عليه وسلم) came to us and we said: We have learnt how to invoke peace upon you; (kindly tell us) how we should bless you. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Say: "O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family as You did bless the family of Ibrahim. Verily You are hamid and majeed (praiseworthy and glorious)" (i.e. the du'a above) [Saheeh Muslim, #804]

Most people see the black dots, not the white dots--the negative. Allah says: And few of my servants are thankful... How can we be thankful--especially on Hajj, when we see so many trials around us? People getting wronged left and right, 30-minute line-ups for washrooms, buses that come hours upon hours late ... how can we learn to see the white dots that we know are there?

Take a look at the following picture. What do you see?

Most people will say they see the black dot. Not the whole field of white dots.

That's people for you! Despite all the white dots around us--our health, wealth, youth, our household, our family, our fine clothing--we only see the black dots. That guy at work who's always talking on the phone. That punk at school who keeps stealing your cookies. That drip-dripping tap that never stops.

Perhaps this is why Allah says:

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ

Translation: And few of My slaves are thankful. [Surah Saba, verse 13]

Subhanallah, how true this is! And never truer then on Hajj. Hajj is a time of hardship, no doubt about that. But one of the main ways to increase the quality of your Hajj is to focus on the white dots, not the black dots. Because Allah will test you--guaranteed--in ways you cannot imagine.

Say you're in Mina, and you suddenly realize you have to use the washroom. So you rush out--only to find over a hundred people lined up across ten stalls! Subhanallah! That's a big black dot--but what are the white dots?

You're alive--that's a big blessing in itself.

You're surrounded by your brothers and sisters in Islam--and Hujjaaj, to boot!

It's not a serious medical emergency--like someone dying--just a need to use the washroom.

And this happened to one of the Hujjaj in the group I went in. Subhanallah, they were literally almost jumping up and down, and some kind older person took pity on them and allowed them to jump the line--just in the nick of time!

The best way to prepare for Hajj is to start looking for all the white dots, now! Whether you're at home, at school, at the mall, at work, at the dentist, think about all the blessings and white dots. And Allah says:

Translation: And He gives you of all that you ask for. But if you count the favours of Allah, never will ye be able to number them. Verily, man is given up to injustice and ingratitude. [Surah Ibrahim, verse 34]

Here are some examples to think about. Post the white dots you find in the comments insha'Allah.

Your group leader tells you the bus to Arafah is coming at 3am, so you should get up at 2am to get ready. You wake up at 2am. 8am comes, and the bus is still not here.

You complete your tawaaf and sa'iee for Hajj, and return to your tent, only to find out they've already served dinner--because the group's going later!

You're sitting on a bus to Mina. You've been sitting for 4 hours. The driver turns off the air-conditioning because the engine is overeating. The guy sitting next to you has someone standing next to him, so he jams himself into you to get more space.

These are just a few examples, taken from some real incidents that happened to people while they were on Hajj. What are the white dots in these situations?

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says in the first few verses of Surah Mu'minoon:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Translation: Successful are the Believers! Those who establish their salaah with khushoo. [Surah Mu'minoon, verses 1-2]

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) carries on to mention many other characteristics of the believer in this surah--however, the thing to focus on, the thing to ponder about, is that the FIRST characteristic that Allah chooses to describe a believer by--a person who establishes the salaah.

Establish the salaah? What does this mean? It means to make it the foundation of your life, to make your life revolve around the salaah, to pray on time and with full sincerity and submissiveness to Allah.

In our day-to-day dealings, we come across three categories of people who pray:

People who just refuse to pray or just pray when they are told to.

Individuals who pray, but it's as if they are in a hundred-meter dash to the finish line; and I think you what I'm talking about.

Those who take their time and establish that relationship with Allah within their salaah.

And it is these people, the people who build that relationship with Allah within their salaah, that Allah refers to as Believers; "Those who establish their salaah with full submissiveness."

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says in another verse of the Qur'an:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

Our purpose of creation is very simple: to worship Allah (سبحانه وتعالى). To submit ourselves to the law of Allah and to follow the ways of our beloved Prophet In this, and only this, will hearts find full tranquility.

Insha'Allah take the time now to establish the salaah--because you never know when your time will come.

Bismillah

How many times have we heard this duaa in our lives: Rabbana aatina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qinaa athaban naar. Have we ever contemplated how complete this duaa is?

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says

Translation: And among the people is he who says, "our Lord, give us in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter no share. But among them is he who says, "our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." [Suratul-Baqarah, verses 200-201]

These ayaat are in the part of Surahtul-Baqarah that addresses Hajj and its rites. In the first part of the ayah ("And among the people is he who says, "our Lord, give us in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter no share.") Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says that there are people who remember only the dunya in their duaa, even when making duaa during Hajj. Why even at that time? When a person makes duaa, he focuses on what he wants, what is important to him, and what he thinks about the most. For these people--may Allah not make us from them--the dunya is their priority, and they think most about it wherever they are. This is the case whether they are performing tawaf or standing at 'Arafat--they only think about attaining the dunya.

In the second part of the ayah, Allah explains that such a person will not have a share in the hereafter. Why? Because that is not what he was asking for. In the ayah, the Arabic word "Khalaaq" خَلاَقٍ means a portion or share which is given to someone because of his good character. Therefore, we also learn from this ayah that good character leads and opens doors to doing good deeds.

Then there is the other type of person, the one who says: "our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." What are the blessings he is asking for in this dunya? Rizq, offspring, wealth, a home, family, and good health. We live in this dunya, we have needs, and we are allowed to ask for them--the companions would even ask Allah for help when their shoelaces broke. So these people also ask for "hasanah" (good) in this world.

Then they say, "and good in the hereafter." What is this good? Jannah, and all the steps that lead to Paradise. They ask for protection from the punishment of the grave. They ask that when the trumpet is blown on the Day of Judgment they are not among those who are terrified[1]. They ask that their book will be given to them in their right hand[2]. They ask that when their deeds are weighed, their good deeds will be heavier then their bad deeds[3]. They ask that when they have to cross the Siraat, they cross it with ease and quickness[4]. They ask to pass the Qantarah without any hardship[5]. And finally, they ask to enter Jannah with ease

When we make this duaa, we should have all of these things in mind inshaAllah. And when will a person ask for these things? Only when he or she knows about them, and knows that they are the steps that we will go through in the akhirah. Knowledge of what we are asking for helps our duaas come from the heart; when a person knows what he is asking for, he is no longer merely repeating the words "hasanah" in the akhirah and "hasanah" in the dunya, he sincerely thinks about what the words include.

In the final part of the ayah, Allah says that these people will then ask for salvation from the hellfire. Why? Because they know what a severe torment and punishment it is.

It was reported from Anas ibn Malik (رضالله عنه) that Rasul Allah (صلي الله عليه وسلم) this du'aa the most [Saheeh Muslim, Book 35, Hadith 6705]. When Anas ibn Malik (رضالله عنه) would make duaa, he would include this duaa. Therefore, we, too should make this duaa as much as we can, and with the meaning in mind.

May Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) make us among those who will have good in this dunya, good in the hereafter and those saved from the torment of Hellfire. ameen

Is alcohol najas? While scholars disagreed, all for madhahib say it IS najas. Why? Because of the ayah in Surah Ma'idah--alcohol, divination, and gambling are rijs (filth). Filth is najas by default! And the hadith of washing the inaa' of the people of the book--inaa' refers to plates and bowls and utensils, but also cups! Why mention cups? Alcohol!

The word "khamr" in Arabic refers to intoxicants (in general), but also specifically to alcohol. We all know drinking alcohol is haraam--but is alcohol itself najas? People use alcohol in medicine, in lens-cleaners, even in foods. What have scholars said about this?

Summary: Allahu 'alim, both sides--those that say alcohol is najas, and those that don't--have strong proofs. Having said that, all four madhahib say alcohol is najas. The main proof--and there are a few proofs--is the ayah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالأَنصَابُ وَالأَزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

Translation: O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are rijs of Shaytan's handwork; eschew such (filth), that ye may prosper. [Surah Ma'idah, verse 90]

The word Allah uses--rijs--means filth, which is najas by default. Gambling and divination are spirituall najas, and alcohol is physically najas! (Those who say alcohol is not najas use this ayah too--gambling and divination are spiritually najas. If you walk into a gambling machine, you don't go wash it off! And alcohol is mentioned here too. But the refutal is that it's common sense that gambling and divination aren't physically najas.)

Another proof: Abu Tha'labah Al-Khushani asked the Prophet: "We are in a land inhabited by people of the book. Can we eat from their inaa'?" The Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) said: "Don't eat from them, unless you can't find an alternative; in that case, wash them and eat from them." The word used, inaa', refers to dishes (plates, bowls), utensils (knives, forks, spoons), AND cups! If alcohol wasn't najas, the Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) wouldn't have mentioned inaa', only plates/bowls/etc. and utensils! So the majority of scholars use this proof, too, to say alcohol is najas.

And follow Imam Malik--who says that even though alcohol is najas, if it's mixed into something--as long as it doesn't change the colour, smell, or taste of the thing--then that thing is pure.

But don't cook with it--because there's a hadith, that "whatever intoxicates in large amounts is haraam even in small amounts."

Wallahu ta'ala 'alim.

What is tawaf, how do you do it, and what's the best way to go about it?

Tawaf, Islamically, means circling around the Ka'bah for Hajj in the way the Prophet (صلي الله عليه وسلم) did and told us to do. The requirements of tawaf are simple--be in a state of wudoo.

The mechanics of tawaf are:

You walk around the ka'bah, seven times

Start at the Black Stone corner (from outside, it has a green light); raise your hand towards the Black Stone and say "Allahu Akbar" (or, if you can reach it, touch the black stone and say Allahu Akbar)

For men, if possible, you walk quickly (raml, in Arabic) the first three times

Make du'a, recite Qur'an, or make dhikr as you walk.

Whenever you reach the Yemeni corner, make the du'a: Rabbana aatiynaa fid-dunya hasanatan, wa fil-akhirati hasanatan, wa kinaa adhaaban-naar (O our Lord! Give us goodness in this life, goodness in the Akhira, and protect us from the Punishment of the Fire.)

Don't push, jab, bite, or hurt anybody.

Once you're done, drink some Zam-Zam, pour a little over your head, and pray two rakahs behind Maqama Ibrahim

Some tips to make your tawaf easier:

If you have family with you--your parents, uncles, sons, daughters, your spouse, your brothers, your sisters--hang on to them! Most people back off from trying to pass when they see people holding on to each other.

Aim for making tawaf on the second or third floor if there are too many people around.

The best time to make tawaf (in Hajj) is around midnight or 1am; the crowd is very sparse around that time. (Don't even think about doing it right before or after Fajr--it's tooooo packed.)

If someone pushes you from behind, turn and look at them (making sure to make eye contact). If they still persist, step to the side to avoid them. If you can't, turn and say "Sabr, akhi/ukhti" (patience, o my brother/sister).

And remember, don't injure anyone! Hajj is supposed to be about patience, and if the crowd isn't moving, pushing won't make it go faster!

We ask Allah to make tawaf easy on all our brothers and sisters (ameen ya rabb!)
