The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to make a du’a:
Transliteration: Allahumma inniy a’oothubika min al-ajzi wal-kasliاللّهُمَّ إنِّي أعُوذُبِكَ مِن العَجزِ وَ الكَسلٍ
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in you from incapability and laziness.
Why is this du’a important? For two reasons:
- Laziness is an attribute of munafiqeen. If this wasn’t bad enough, being lazy leads to procrastination, which leads to its own set of problems.
- It’s common these days for people to say “I can’t do it.” Like “I can’t pray at work,” or “I can’t achieve X.” The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say a’oothubillah to that kind of talk. Think about it!
Action Plan:
- Memorize this du’a and make it every day in your sujood in every salaah. You have the Arabic, transliteration, and translation–you have no excuse not to do it!
- Share your tips. What other tips and tricks do you use to overcome laziness and procrastination? Let us know in the comments!

As Salaamu’alaykuum wa RahmatullLaahi wa barakatuuh,
Jazakhallaah khayran, you sent it just in time walhamdulillLaah.
& Taufeeq is with Allaah azawajjaal,
Salaam.
One technique that I find useful if I’m feeling lazy or procrastinating because a task is too big, is to “punch a hole” in my project. I focus on the VERY NEXT action I need to do, and spend whatever time I can–I tell myself just 5, 15, or 30 minutes–and do whatever I can. Rinse and repeat.
thank you very much may ALLAH bless you with his abondant blessing and and give you retaintive memory of posting such duas. insha allah i will make it a continous duas in my sujud wassalamu alaikum
jazakAllah kheir for this. but i have a q, why does the duaa (or any personal duaa) need to be done in salah have to be in arabic if everything else in salah is in the arabic according to sunnah? sometimes u want to ask for something in salah-but u don’t know the arabic for it, so it is better NOT to ask for it, than to ask for it in your own language?? please explain and provide sources.
i am aware that salah needs to be done in arabic..but the duaa, even though a part of salah..i’ve never heard this before, so i am not attacking, just confused..and is it fard to be done this way, or just rec’d??
also i am living in madinah..do u know of any sister things that go on around here in english and whether the islamic university has plans to open up a sisters branch, even if its just for some classes, inshaAllah? its more like finding things via word of mouth, but any organizations you could rec’d to me would be helpful inshaAllah.
barakAllah feekum,

Regarding du’a in salah being in Arabic: see this comment here.
The summary is: there’s difference of opinion among ulama; the better insha’Allah opinion is that you CAN make du’a in ANY language in your sujood; but right before the tasleem, when sitting, the du’a MUST be in Arabic. Wallahu ‘alam. I can’t give you any sources other than my teachers. (See comment that I linked.)
Regarding Medinah, Allahu ‘alam, you’re best-off looking for local things. I know Umm al-Qurra admits both men and women, if that’s an option for you (in Mecca).
jazakAllah kheir..no, Makkah isn’t an option but i do hope that one day something like extra courses will open up for sisters at the Islamic University here in Madinah. it was nice to have the permission to be on the campus yesterday at the Book Fair..open for families..meaning sisters for 3 hours..alhamdulilah…books everywhere!
i m in class 9th and afer a week or 2 i m going to have my exams but i m not getting serious and lazy for studying plese tell me soluton for this
