Subhanallah - wonderful post. This comment reminds me of a similar occasion when a Shaykh Hassan of Bridgeport CT was walking out of the taraweeh prayer he just led, and saw a young teenager there (who also finished up taraweeh) wearing a gold chain. Shaykh Hassan - may Allah reward him - approached the boy wearing the chain. Here's the key - he had a smile on his face ear to ear. He picked up the boy's chain gently off his chest and looked at it, and while smiling asked him "Is this gold?" The boy affirmed it was. Shaykh Hassan then smiled even larger and said - "It'd look even better on you if it was silver." And then he left, still smiling.

Man that's the type of dawah I was blown away by. This boy who's clearly just a young boy and needs more guidance and maturity - was at the masjid after all! Shaykh Hassan knew this and was pleased that he was. Not only did he correct him and do his part in stopping evil, but he also inspired the boy to obey and come more frequently to the masjid! So yes - we must stop evil when the she-camel is going to be killed, but we must tread carefully and politely in the manner of our Prophet.

Jazakallakhyr,

Sometimes practicing Muslims often rush to 'stop evil,' and in doing so fail to follow the sunnah of naseeha; so alhamdulilah that example can remind us to always follow the prophetic method of dealing with our fellow Muslims in a inviting manner.

@zfnd on twitter requested some examples, so here they are. Allahu 'alam from which shaykh and in which class I heard this.

There was a brother who came to the masjid with a big gold chain. Someone not so practicing, masha'Allah in the masjid to make sujood to Allah. They said, "bro, you have to take that (gold chain) off before you pray." Because men are not allowed to wear gold.

So he did. And he prayed.

And on his way out, this uncle comes up to him and RIPS the chain off his neck.

And he never came back to the masjid after that. Subhanallah. Sometimes the da'wah you give throws people AWAY from Islam. So be wise in it. Aisha said: there is nothing except that kindness adds to it (and improves it).
