“Why?”

Often, non-Muslims question us about aspects of our faith. "Why do you wear hijab" or "why don't you eat pork" or "why don't you drink or date".

And we get defensive and mangle our explainations. "Well alcohol's not good for you" or "pigs are dirty" and so on. Which is not correct.

The answer to all these questions is very, very simple:

Because Allah or His Messenger (صلي الله عليه وسلم) said so.

That's it. Done. Finished. Best of all, your reasons can never be negated--for example, one might say "well, pigs are no longer as dirty and viral as they used to be." Then what are you going to say?

Speak the truth!

And, when you finally reach that level of "well what are some of the benefits we extract from this", then you can peer into the wisdom behind the ruling and learn a few of the benefits, but in a limited way. Often times (for example, masseh--wiping over the top of your socks for wudoo, not the bottom) we simply don't know the reason for the ruling.

Allah alone knows best.

May Allah help us to accept and understand His rulings, ameen.

If you know any good examples of non-obvious rulings, comment them in inshaAllah. Jazakumullahu khayr.

  1. It was narrated the Ali Bin Abi Talib (May allah be pleased with) said:

لو أن المسألة تخضع للعقل .. لكان المسح على باطن القدم أولى من المسح على ظاهره

If it was to the mind (logic), it would have been more logical to do Masseh (Wipe) the bottom of the Khuf (what is worn in the feet) instead of the top.

    Shaykh Sha’arawi added:

This is because the bottom is what gets dirty. The process is for preparing oneself to come to Allah SWT, so one should not come to Allah SWT with any arguments , as Allah SWT is not asked about what He does or what He commands …

  2. I find that for kids and for those who are new in Islam (and maybe even those Old in Islam lol), it is often helpful to understand the wisdoms behind the prohibitions, because they or we might not be at the level where we realize that Allah knows best

  3. MashaAllah,Like your choice on how to express our faith to others.
Ps. Its always good to give the reasoning behind what we do if we know that too. If reasoning is not in the Quran some is bound to be somewhere among the Sunnah but yea overall we do what we do for Allah (SWT).

    May Allah bless you,ameen.

  4. i think instead of ’scientific’ reasons… the explanation should answer the question: “Why must we do things Allah tells us to do even though they may not seem harmful?”

  5. rather: “Why mustn’t we do things Allah tells us not to do, even thought they do not seem harmful.?”

  6. It comes down to Allah’s attributes–he is all-knowing, all powerful. And who knows the creation better then the Creator?
